"A Gentle Sacrifice"
A Gentle Sacrifice
I love to sleep with a book
Open on my chest,
Its legs straddling me,
Not like a lover but more like my guardian angel.
Its arms over my heart,
Pressing with white palms
The hidden bruises
Sharply but kindly,
Its spine breaking slowly for me,
Its flower unfolding, peaking and dying just for me.
Soon, I will place it on the shelf like a body in a tomb
Yellowed, crumpled, tattooed with painful ink.
And in parting I will say—
You hurt me, you know
pressing the bleeding places,
But you’ve healed me a little more, paper angel.
This is why I end my books with a kiss
— lips to the eternal lips of gentle sacrifice.
